Historic Archives Center, Lincoln Public Library, Lincoln, Massachusetts

The renovated Archives Center was built at the lower level of this 1884 Romanesque Revival landmark designed by William G. Preston. It includes an expanded climate controlled reproof archive vault with movable compact shelving. The adjacent Lincoln Historical Room has been renovated and provides a convenient work area for researchers. There is also a separate, secure workstation area for the archivist. Previously inaccessible found space beneath an existing hearth was captured for expansion. Careful attention in the design was given to connecting the renovated suite of rooms to the main functional spaces of the historic library building. Both the arrangement of the new spaces and use of architectural features, such as wood paneling derived from the original design are used to achieve this.
